change

it's time for a change.

it's time to clean up the house a little,
and my life a little.

it seems that everyone around here,
 around this valley
is worn out a bit
a bit jaded.

that same vigorous shining enthusiasm that invigorated,
(was it something in the air, they wondered?)
that enthused a new generation
 is now obsolete.

the young bright kids were just full of themselves, it seems

it's too bad

because we thought
once upon a time
we were on the verge of a revolution

we thought
not too long ago
that we could really change things

everything was changing so quickly
and it was fun to be on top of it
on top of the news
on top of the world
masters of change

but it's becoming clear that it's too much
it's insanity to change so quickly
and so we're going to take a step back and breathe for a little
and figure out what it means to be sane
and see what all this new technology has really given us

it is a small instance of the continual battle between optimism and pessimism
(did i say pessimism? i meant realism)
and the optimism went perhaps a bit too far
but nobody enjoys a party with too many realists.

so it's time for a rediscovery
as we're all learning what it means to start anew
to start life again
taking a pause to sort things over
to go dance our brains out a little
(i think god was in the music last night)
to rediscover joy and thought and meaning in our lives
and to remember kindness and wisdom
lest "profitability" and "share price"
and all sorts of completely tangential business
get too intertwined in the business of our lives.

the caterpillar,
someone dear to me just said,
is going into her coccoon.
: will there be flowers when she reemerges?

the question is key to us all.
