I'm quitting my job at Legato.

No ill will, really, at least, not coming from me. It just wasn't my thing: most folks there weren't my age, so I didn't really develop tight "peers" per se, and the market for enterprise backup software sort of has to be boring by definition -- I mean, if you were in charge of Chevron's backups, would you sign up with some hot, shiny, new technology, or something old, boring, and weathered? I'd go with the latter. There were some great people there who I really am going to miss. But I don't think I'll be going back to the backup space any time soon.

Most of why I left, though, has more to do with how excited I am to be working for my new company. The one thing about them that really sucks is that I can't say what they're doing. Yet. But I can say that it's remarkably exciting technology and I've been thinking about what they're hoping to do for the last six of years of my life. The people are very bright and are closer to my age. I'm really pumped! I start work on Monday.

My digital camera is broken. Well, it really broke on Christmas break, but you wouldn't believe how awful I am at mailing things. It's like, everyone has got their talents and their sore points, right? One of my sore points is mailing things. Another is keeping my room neat. Anyhow, so my camera's still bust and it's killing me. =/ I'm quite attached to it. Perhaps that's why I'm loathe to send it away, even though it's broken...

My non-profit is coming along quite nicely. When I returned from my road trip, I saw that Vanessa had forwarded me some info on a conference in Geneva being hosted by the United Nations. Even though I was a day past the deadline, I wrote up a quick one-page summary of a talk I could give, submitted it, and was quickly accepted to the conference! Fantastic! So I'm going to Geneva in a month's time to go and talk about robust, politically heterogeneous non-profit Internet services along with my buddy Graham from CalTEG (who gets upset if the T, E, and G aren't capitalized!). That should be exciting.

In the interim, the colo's getting some new boxes in -- it's exciting to see the slow but steady growth: we've filled up half of a rack of equipment solid with 1U and 2U servers, all serving not-for-profit causes.
