So.

Long time, no write. My apologies. What the hell have I been up to?

1. Work
Work is actually going pretty well. I'm at Legato Systems, where I work in the Advanced Development group, improving our product's performance & scalability, porting it to new platforms, making it easier to work with, and rearchitecting it. This product is called NetWorker; it is a network backup program that makes sure that midsized to large companies never-ever-ever lose their data. It's been around for more than ten years, so some parts of the code are a bit crufty. ;) But it is cool, since I get to work hands-on with Bob Lyon, who pretty much was responsible for NFS and RPC at Sun Microsystems after which he proceeded to found Legato.

I'm focusing my longer-term research on distributed systems, distributed backup, and efficient data replication -- I have had a long-term interest in these areas, and work is now providing a venue for these activities.

2. CCCP
My pet project, the California Community Colocation Project is going very well. The CCCP's goal is to provide donation-based colocation & virtual hosting to individuals and non-profits. This last week, we formally joined the Online Policy Group (OPG), so we're now formally part of a 501(c)3 non-profit! We've already got one server up in Fremont, and we're arranging to acquire use of a space in Palo Alto with a high-speed net link.

3. Hacker Dojo
I love my house! I've put together a house server and house client computer for public use and have enjoyed simply hanging out with my most excellent housemates. I've done some painting, built trails, and watched movies with 'em. It's a grand gang. Come and visit!

...Long Term...
I'm hoping to go to grad school in 2003, probably for a PhD in Computer Science; ideally, I'd like to go to MIT or Berkeley, if I can get in.

So that's it in a nutshell. I've basically just been very busy and happy and consequently have not had much time to mull over my website. I tend to find that when I'm kind of unhappy I tend to be more philosophical and artistic; my most productive work is often done like that. So I seem to be cursed with a spate of happiness. =)

I'll see if I can whip up some more work for the site in the coming days, however.

Cheerio,
2   -david

PS: I'm in a book! =)
