What does it mean that I've copyrighted the pictures and text
on my website?
Well, the brunt of it is that if I see you take my content and put your name on it and post it on your website, I'm not going to be happy about it and I'm going to make you take it down. I don't like it when people call someone else's work their own; this has actually happened several times before. However, if you like something that you see, ask me and I'll almost always let you use it. (I haven't turned anyone down yet, and several dozen have asked.) If you're an individual or a non-profit (i.e., you don't have banner ads), I'll usually let you use any text or pictures you ask for, on condition that you include some form of attribution in your work; like just mentioning my name and preferably including a way to contact me, via a link to my website or email address. If you're a commercial entity and you want to reuse some of my work, I may ask for a fee. It's no fair for you to be making money off of my work if you just copy it. I put a lot of work into the design of the front page, main pages (like this one), my pictures pages, and my resume. I'd like to apply the same policy with design that I do with my text: if you are an individual or non-profit, feel free to copy my design, but I'd appreciate a link to my page and an email telling me about your site (I'd be flattered!), and if you're a company a small fee might be appropriate. (Although I don't honestly see this happening!) I have released the PHP3 source to my website under the same conditions. Just click "View Source" on any web page that you're interested in! Some people in the past have asked me about my stance on intellectual property. The short answer is that I don't have a very solid stance just yet, other than to say that the distribution of ideas is good (hence I put up my website), whereas misappropriation of ideas is bad (i.e., to call other people's ideas your own, to label their work as yours). Later, as I reflect on life and read, I will likely cultivate this notion into a more specific philosophy that will with high probability end up being expounded here, on this website. | ||
